I have recently decided to build a 40s/50s themed bar adjacent to a garden room on my property. With this in mind, I hunted high and low for a suitable bar top/servery to sit within it to give the right period ‘feel’, but to no avail. That is of course until May, 2022, when I came across Mr. Nuttall who is Second Period Furniture, with his reimagined and beautifully restored wooden pieces from yesteryear on his website! I had a brain wave, and contacted him to source me a sideboard or similar, to transform into a bar…..without any fuss, he readily agreed, and he found me an Ercol Colonial sideboard that was there or thereabouts. We agreed on a colour and its appearance, but it needed raising up several inches to be more apt for the use I wanted to put it to. This was done with no quibble, and we exchanged messages throughout its transformation, plus photos were sent periodically to show me what I was getting. So what was the end result……? Incredible!!!! As they used to say, you can’t see the join! This piece is a wonderfully painted and polished and is the centrepiece of my now completed ’Grafton Arms’, and has drawn many admiring comments from those who visit us to partake of a glass of beer, wine or fine malt whisky My wife and I are delighted with the sideboard and it really took to its new use like a duck to water! It is without any hesitation whatsoever that we both thoroughly recommend SPF to anyone considering giving new life to a quality old preloved item of furniture within Mr. Nuttalls remit.

We first came across Second Period Furniture via EBay. We bought a nest of Ercol tables that Peter had refurbished, and were highly impressed at the attention to detail and the standard of his workmanship. We had an Ercol dining table that had been stored in a chicken shed for several years which we wanted to bring back to life but with a more modern look. We sent it to Peter who soon had it looking fantastic. He painted the base a lovely grey and sanded down and oiled the top which brought out all the natural grain. He then sourced some Ercol dining chairs which he painted to match. We had many compliments on it. Peter then sourced another Ercol table for us which again he renovated to a very high standard
and it looks great in our holiday cottage. We’ve also had two bedside tables from Peter. I gave him an idea of what I wanted and he found the perfect tables, painted them and put new handles on. Peter has a really good eye for detail and his workmanship is exemplary.

The quality of restoration work undertaken by Peter is highly professional with real care taken over all the details: from paint colour, to hinges, to the finishing of the beautiful oak top. The positive features of the original Wood Bros ‘Old Charm’ design have been sympathetically retained and restored, with wood carvings and quality materials enhanced – but with the stunning new paint finish making the piece feel really fresh and modern. We visited Peter’s workshop before selecting this piece; Peter was very helpful in showing us examples so we could choose exactly the right piece for our home.
